The Happiest Day in Galveston

Advertisements

This morning my friend and I attended a historic reenactment of the Juneteenth proclamation at Ashton Villa, the place where the General Order No.3 was read in 1865. The gathering was beautiful, uniting a joyful and diverse crowd. One of the speakers said that Juneteenth is the happiest day in Galveston. We felt lucky to be here and be able to be part of this community event.

Later, there were secret service helicopters flying around as Joe Biden visited the Island to attend a service at Reedy Chapel. I walked on over and actually caught a glimpse of him. I didn’t take a picture, but the lady standing next to me did.

In the evening, there were fireworks, which I saw from my front porch while listening as the people on my neighbor’s porch, who are visiting the Island, very sweetly explained to their little girl what Juneteenth is all about.
