Chicken and Cruise Ships

Advertisements

The dog and I woke up with a cruise ship visible from our window. Island birds were making a lot of noise, and our little pink room at Sugar’s Inn smelled like bacon from the restaurant downstairs. It was a very promising start of the day, and our day did not disappoint.

After walking and feeding Holly, I had bacon, pancakes, and much needed coffee downstairs. The dog and I drove out to the ship channel – my favorite place! – and there I found a flower discarded by the water. Perhaps an homage to Betty and Cornelius? A gesture of remembrance?

Back downtown we met our friend and loitered with gusto. We even went to an impromptu estate sale. Then we ended up at Maceo’s for iced tea and muffalettas eaten outside, where Ronnie’s chickens are. And the cruise ships.

One of the chickens jumped the fence and started running around the patio. I caught it. I’m good at catching chickens. I have technique. But it’s been about 30 years since I last held one of these feathered creatures. So this was special. Even more so since it was one of Ronnie’s chickens and he really really cared about them.

The sweet people who work at Maceo’s and take care of Ronnie’s chickens now gave me some fresh eggs. It was so nice! Like Ronnie sending me a little Easter gift from the Other Side.

I’m back in Houston, so tomorrow I’ll go to HEB to buy tortillas to eat with the lovely eggs.

I wish Horse Day could last forever. But maybe it does. I mean, I can choose to celebrate the horses in Storms of Malhado each and every day of my life! I actually feel like I should. So tomorrow I’ll have myself a nice Horse Day breakfast with yummy HEB tortillas and fresh eggs from Ronnie’s chickens.

This little getaway has been good. And yes, I do feel like I got some of the spiritual guidance I needed.
