The weather is beautiful on Galveston Island, the air is scented with salt and orange blossoms, Spring Break is over, and it’s officially Horse Week! What is Horse Week? It’s a holiday I invented to celebrate the anniversary of my historical novel, Storms of Malhado. Horse Week references an anecdote in the book that involves two horses climbing the stairs in the League Kempner House to survive the Storm of 1900. I obviously made up this story, but would like for people to believe it’s true, and I think it’s starting to catch on.
So yes, it’s Horse Week and I’m celebrating all week long and asking others to participate too. There will even be a special dinner, so today I stopped by Nautical Antiques and bought some of the thick porcelain dinner plates that came off ships that I’ve been coveting for years. I went to Hendley Market too (where some of my paintings are now displayed and available for sale!) and bought two little antique saucers that came from Vienna. I plan to spread a rumor that they were used to present treats to Lipizzaner horses. Stay tuned for more Horse Week updates!
