Shades of Betty. Horse Week Day 5

I started preparing for my Storms of Malhado dinner party. I bought more plates from Nautical Antiques, and I started doing some food prep. I also started to listen to the audiobook again. I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to it already, but definitely more than 5. Getting it recorded is possibly the best money I’ve ever spent. Also, I had this vision for a while now of myself cooking for the dinner party while listening to the book. It’s rainy outside, and it’ll rain tomorrow when I’m making the desserts (the part I look forward to the most). It all fits very well with the aesthetic of the book – the scrumptious sweets, the gloomy weather.

Still, for some reason I was feeling kind of melancholic today. Is it Betty’s influence? Perhaps it is. She’s still my favorite character in the story, Betty with her sadnesses and her desire to withdraw. Betty who ends up eating chocolate cake in her garden under the full moon. Neurotic and romantic, at times a bit too passive, to resigned to her fate, yet plotting something truly outrageous, Betty is definitely not someone all readers will like and relate to. But I do. I’ve had my own Betty moments, and for some reason, today was one of them.
