Today was cloudy and it rained on and off. I made it to the beach just for a little bit. I mostly cleaned my little house and got it ready for my absence. And as I was doing this, there were two moments that were very nice.
First, I received a booking request from a sweet couple for the weekend of November 6th. They said they were looking for historic charm. They seemed like my ideal guests, frankly. But. If you know you know. November 6th is Lone Star Rally weekend. That’s when hundreds of motorcycles descend on Galveston and literally make the whole Island vibrate from their engines. I checked with my guests and it turned out that no, they didn’t know about this event, and it was not what they wanted. They changed their reservation to a different weekend. And I was left feeling that perhaps I’ve dismissed my potential as an Airbnb host too soon. After all, I am good at this, mostly because I am knowledgeable about the Island and ways to have a good time there, but also because I care a lot about my guests and their experience.
I was still riding high on this wave of self-confidence when I found a letter from the Historical Foundation in my mailbox informing me that I could order a Storm Survivor yard sign for my little house in honor of the 125th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1900. I obviously ordered it and my friend promised to pick it up and put it up in my absence and send me pictures. A nice little reminder that my little house survived the worst natural disaster in US history.
I obviously should be awarded Homeowner of the Year for ordering a yard sign.
