An Island Christmas

Today I drove down to the Island looking for my snake stamps. I found them! So, I was able to continue happily addressing Christmas cards whike baking my very favorite ginger cake, which I bake once a year at Christmas.

Also, the universe gave me a little wink. Tina Knowles’ memoir, Matriarch, was available as a ‘skip the line’ loan in Libby, and I’ve been listening to it all day. It starts by recounting her childhood in Galveston, and it felt so good to listen to her story. Also, it reminded me that I know things about this place. When she talked about desegregation and Kelton Sams, and kids getting arrested at Dairy Queen, I knew those stories. They were part of my research for Storms of Malhado, and it was a nice reminder that I did learn so much about those times.

Meanwhile, at the Then & Now Bookshop, Storms of Malhado is shelved close to The Promise, and Breakaway Bridesmaid is sitting on the shelf below. That made me happy.

And now the cake is cooling, and I’ve almost ran out of snakes, so it might be time for bed.
