What the Horses Saw

“Katie’s own heart felt heavy. The trees were a real loss. She remembered the vision she had before this awful storm, the Island bare in the merciless sun. Yet nothing could be as awful as the destruction Galveston witnessed after the Storm of 1900. She thought of the horses again, her poor horses, seeing it all from one of the windows, and for some reason it broke her heart more than the thought of her own untimely death. The poor animals! No wonder they chose to never come down again. For what was left to greet them but wreckage and sadness and horror?”
