Yesterday I had a really good day on Galveston Island. I can’t really explain it, as I had been ready to give up on wanting to be there at all. Summer has been just too oppressive. But then, things changed as they are known to do, and the Island found her ways to lure me back with its many elusive charms.
After my friend helped me fix a seemingly broken fridge in the morning (it turns out the coils needed to be cleaned, and I’m quite proud of figuring this out), I spent the day happily preparing my recent paintings for their upcoming encounter with Houston collectors. I painted edges, and wired all big pieces. All the while, Felicia the fridge happily hummed along. Yes, obviously, I named her. I figured a nice name and some clean coils will go a long way toward keeping her happy (and cold).
By the time I braved the heat for an evening at my friend’s house, I was already in a good mood and actually had a sense of accomplishment. See, I kept feeling like this has been an unproductive summer, but I now have a nice little body of work to show for it, and some exciting plans for showing these paintings to my collectors.
Today I brought some of the paintings to Houston. And then suddenly I felt really exhausted again, the way I’ve been feeling in this heat. But I resolve to allow myself the rest and feel good about it too. Somehow, between the heat and the exhaustion I managed to paint a bunch of stuff I really love.
