Sometimes the Island likes to remind visitors that it’s a wild place and it can kill you. I was walking to breakfast this morning, when a coyote with something bloody in its mouth ran across my path. It was very close to me, but luckily distracted by its prey. I decided it was time to return home. And I spent all day thinking about coyote symbolism. Coyotes are tricksters. They’re there to remind you that things are not what they seem. They also serve as a reminder not to take life too seriously and to allow yourself to play. Have I been doing enough of that lately? Of course, writing about Miss Vulpe means spending time with my favorite trickster. But is that enough?
I decided I had to paint the coyote and spend more time meditating on its meaning. And I decided to do the beginning of the year Lucky Paintings on gold background again, just like I did at the beginning of this year. More on that later, but for now, I’ll leave you with a picture I took of The Adventures of Miss Vulpe next to one of my favorite lucky paintings, a little fox.
