Sad Horse Breakfast

So, my friend and I had seen this place on social media that looked really cool. It’s a ranch with horses but also a big outdoor restaurant that serves Turkish breakfast. The videos we saw all looked idyllic, and the food looked very good. Here, I must say I have a soft spot for Turkish food and hospitality, especially breakfast!

My friend and I are good about prioritizing what’s important, and we figured a breakfast feast with horses in a pretty place would be very much up our alley. We made time for this and drove about an hour outside of Houston. Down a dirt road, and a short muddy walk from a muddy parking lot, we were greeted by a table displaying labubus and other plastic items for sale that will end up in landfills. We should have seen this as a red flag, but we were excited – and at this point pretty hungry. We were indeed served Turkish breakfast in the proximity of some sad looking horses. The breakfast looked pretty unless you looked really close. Nothing was very good. Except for the bread. The bread was nice. We were given spring rolls instead of börek. Then we were offered the opportunity to buy vegetable baggies to feed the horses.

We returned to the city, where we obviously belong, and I resolved to make börek and other Turkish breakfast dishes for my friend soon. We hope the horses are ok and hopefully less sad on days that are less muddy.

We did not eat the spring rolls.
