It feels surreal making paper maché animals while waiting for another Texas freeze, but then again any activity would seem as absurd, so I might as well make paper maché animals. All the while hoping the freeze won’t be too catastrophic, that the power grid will hold up, that the pipes won’t freeze, that the supplies I got are adequate, that I won’t have to use my arctic sleeping bag and camping stove and flashlights and battery operated candles. Each year I promise myself that I won’t ever put myself through this again, that next winter will find me in a part of the world where homes are solidly built to withstand the cold, pipes are buried, and there’s no impending sense of doom when temperatures drop below freezing. Why am I still here? Please actually take your time to answer this and give me thoughtful and compelling reasons, because I wonder about it often, and during weather emergencies I wonder about it even more.
But perhaps we all need to distract ourselves with paper maché animals. I’m making these for my Mardi Gras Surprise Boxes. I didn’t want to buy any plastic crap to include as fun little items in the boxes, so I thought these little animals would be a nice sustainable alternative. They’re whimsical and a bit clumsy, but then again, it’s what makes them fun.

You stay here in Houston and winter storms because of the diversity of people and experiences in one place 💜and because we love you!
The diversity is my favorite. I feel like anywhere else I go, I’d miss that. Let’s do something fun when this stupid freze is over! ❤️
